Benadalid is situated on the road that links Gaucin with Ronda. It is thought that its name originates from a Berber Tribe which settled here in the 8th Century – Banu Al Jalid. It is perched on the side of a mountain which is part of the Serrania de Ronda. It’s a typical pretty Andalucian white village with whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, with just a couple of bars in the narrow streets. Recently this village has come to the attention of tourists as it boasts a near perfect Castle which is now a cemetery. The castle was built by the Romans and then ended up in Arabic hands when the Moors invaded. For a short period the castle was in the hands of the leader of the Muladi rebellion (Christian convert to Islam) Omar Ben Hafsum in the late 9th and 10th Centuries. In the late 12th Century it was established as the border village between the Kingdom of Seville which was under Christian rule and the Nazari Kingdom of Granada. Due to the fact that it had a natural barrier provided by the mountain range that it stood in and its fortifications that had been erected Benadalid proved to be a tough village to overcome for incoming invaders. The village itself is a charming sleepy village as most of the settlements in this area are. Rarely interrupted by tourism this village is becoming a stop for tourists that venture further into the Malaga provinces campo. There are a couple of small bars in and around the narrow streets and these are very popular with the locals. The surrounding countryside is some of the most beautiful that there is to be found in Andalucia and should be worth a visit if you are passing through.
