Caleta de Vélez is a nice little seaside resort located between Torre del Mar and Algarrobo Costa.
It wasn’t until the 20th century that this coastal strip began to take shape as a recognisable village with its own small church, a time when the fishing sector began to take on an added importance.
The area’s main attraction is clearly the sandy beach lined by a pleasant promenade. The beach offers bathers a full range of facilities and services: sunbed and umbrella rental, toilets, showers, lifeguards, rubbish bins, parking and access for the disabled.
But aside from the lure of Caleta de Vélez’s golden sands there is also a working fishing port built in 1972, a marina with more than 200 moorings and a sailing club. The daily fish market is a colourful sight as the fishermen unload their catches ready for sale and although not a big place, Caleta de Vélez is well off for bars, restaurants and cafés, many serving locally caught fish and seafood.
There are also a range of small shops, supermarkets and banks, while the Saturday street market held on the coast road has stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, flowers, clothes and all kinds of household items and the huge El Ingenio shopping centre is only a few miles away between Torre del Mar and Vélez Málaga.
Caleta de Vélez makes a great base for golfing enthusiasts, with the 18-hole Baviera golf course just a five minute drive away and also close at hand for the energeticially inclined, is the Aqua Velis waterpark.
Caleta de Vélez is not a municipality in its own right, but for administrative purposes is counted as part of Vélez Málaga, where there is town hall offering tourist information.
