Canillas de Aceituno sits below the looming La Maroma mountain in the Sierra Tejedar mountain range. It is the highest peak in the region and is locally known as “the Roof of Malaga” and has a summit of 2065m.
The landscape here is breathtaking in its scale, but is more rugged than the countryside surrounding the area of Competa. The coast can be reached in half an hour via the town of Velez Malaga, as can the inland reservoir of Lake Vinuela. The road to Canillas winds through vineyards and irrigated orchards of almonds, avocado, chirimoya (known as the custard apple) and mango trees that all play such an important role in the local economy.
Historically the town relied more heavily on the silk trade than agriculture and the name owes it’s origins to both the Romans and Moors. The Roman word Canillae means “area of cane groves” and the Moors later added the word Azeytuni meaning “coloured silk fabric”. This later became Canillas de Aceituno and has nothing to do with the Spanish word aceituno meaning “olive”.
The town is typical in its Moorish design with winding streets, balconies and pretty plazas. You’ll come across little bars, restaurants and shops whilst wandering through the village and there’s much to explore. Canillas de Aceituno forms part of what is known as the Mudejar Route, which is the towns and villages in this region, that feature Moorish architecture built in Christian areas. Typically this architecture features detailed brickwork and ornately carved beams and timber. There are many buildings that reflect the town’s history including the Gothic church built over an ancient mosque and the old medieval walls that protected the town during Moorish times.
It’s a busy working town and is relatively unaffected by tourism which makes it a great place to visit if you want a taste of “real Spain”. Although there are foreigners living in and around the village there are a lot less than in other parts of La Axarquia, yet the town has great facilities. A recently opened public outdoor pool has been a great addition and includes a large bar and playground. With plenty of places to eat and drink, great views and plenty of history, Canillas de Aceituno has more to offer than it is given credit.
