Fuengirola was a significant fishing village until a few decades ago. Some fishing boats can still be seen in the port, but mostly it is home to yachts with a backdrop of high rise buildings which have seen better days. In Roman times there were important marble quarries in the nearby mountains, divers recently discovered a wreck containing stones destined for other shores. They have since been salvaged and assembled on display near the beach. The castle to the east of the town is a welcome relief to eyes tired of the concrete high rises and busy town roads. ‘Castillo Sohail’ was a fortification built by the Moors in the 10th Century. It was destroyed when the Christians took the town in 1485 being rebuilt in 1730; it was used to help control illicit trade with Gibraltar. It is now occasionally used for concerts and exhibitions.
