The name – meaning ´´stone fountain´´- comes from the fountain of medicinal water in the middle of the village. It was already known and appreciated in ancient times. This is a quiet and small village near the salt water lagoon which is the biggest lagoon in Andalucia covering almost 1400 hectares. Migrating birds congregate here, notably the flamingos who also breed in the nesting area of the lagoon. There is a tourist office near the fountain for valuable information and help. Fuente de Piedra is one of the villages on the itinerary of the American writer W. Irving who in 1829, and fascinated by the exotic and exuberant Moorish remains in Andalucia, took his journey through Malaga, Granada and Sevilla.
