Set almost impossibly high up on the mountain side, Gaucin has stunning views of Gibraltar and African coast over the peaks of the Serrania.
The 13th Century Moorish Castillo de Aquila is one of the main sights which was mostly destroyed by a powder magazine that blew up in 1848. The defender of Tarifa, Guzman el Bueno died in Gaucin in 1309 fighting the Moors.
The Garrison from Gibraltar used to stay at the Fonda Nacional (opened in the 1860’s) formerly known as Hotel Ingles which is now simply a restaurant.
