We are going out to the Malaga area for 3 weeks in july, to take some time to look around for a nice community to live in in a few years time. When we have found a nice area we intend to rent for a while so that we can take time to look and find the right place. We fancy something in the country with some land. Any help or sdvice would be appreciated and we would love to meet up with anyone who has already made the move

Hi,

There's loads of advice around, it's often a case of knowing where to start !
I suggest you make up a wish list of things that are important to you, such as
in a village/town or the countryside;
near shops bars restaurants;
near schools (don't know your age group !);
ditto hospitals;
near airport/coast
need english speaking;
local jobs ?;
do you want a new build/ready refurb or are you into diy;
you mention land - do you plan to maintain it yourselves or will you need someone to do it for you
etc, etc
For example, we wanted a rural place but within walking distance of at least a shop of some sorts. Walking distance was a concept that was very loosely interpreted by the agents - " but it's only 10 mins in the car" ! The whole point was that we intend to retire out there, and the day will come when we won't have a car !! Places with land in villages/towns are much harder to come by than the beautiful view from the top of a 10 min dirt track variety ! Good vehicle access was important to us because my husband is diabetic and I needed to know that an ambulance could get to us at any time if necessary - you get the general idea !

Then there's the houses themselves - we drew up a simple form to fill out as we went round a house with things like address; price; size of plot; no of bedrooms; mains servces on site?; phone line/ strength of mobile signal; and a big space to jot down any other notes - this, with photos, helped us to remember which house was which (not easy when you've seen half a dozen a day for a week !). You sound as though you have the right approach, but don't part with any money until you've walked away and thought about it, and even then you need to be careful !!!

As for areas - one man's meat etc, and it depends on how far inland you want to be, but the alora region is nice, as is casabermeja, and further inland antequera (near where we are !!). We personally found the comares area rather 'disjointed' but you may have a different view !!

I could ramble on for hours, but don't want your eyes to glaze over !! If you'd like to hear more you can PM me and I can bore you in private !!

Hope this helps

Cheers,
Chris
PS I noticed your UK location was Wales - north or south ?

Oh yes, I sort of didn't make that very clear did I ?! It's what I meant when I said "need english speaking", but I could have phrased it better !!

My Spanish gets me by tho it's not very good, but one day I met a family in Antequera, phrase book in sweaty hands - they had moved over (Mum, Dad, 2 teenage kids, & granny) and were renting while they tried to buy a 10 bed ruin to convert into a guest house - they didn't speak a word of Spanish !!!! Some people are just asking to get conned.......
