The Contemporary Museum of Engravings is the largest in Europe and the first of it´s kind in Spain. The museum is situated in the old Bazan Hospital, a building dating back to the XVI century. It was restored by the Junta de Andalucia and opened in November 1992 thanks to the donation of almost 2.000 pieces of work collected by the historian Dr. Jose Luis Morales y Marin who was a professor of History of Art at Madrid university. The collection has since grown with donations from various artists, groups and foundations and personal donations including a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida which is the only one exhibited in an Andalucian Museum.
The collections are periodically renewed to give visitors a varied look on Spain during the XX century including artists such as Dali, Miro and Picasso through to the different movements which have developed after their time from great Spanish artists whose names are too numerous to mention. Many seasonal exhibitions are held in the museum and courses and lectures developed by professors, museum directors, and institutional directors both Spanish and foreign. The museum itself has carried out various exhibitions in other Spanish cities and abroad in other foreign capitals.
Another part of the museum to visit is the Library of the History of Art which is situated in the third floor of the building. and a workshop is offered where classes on this artistic technique are given, both for beginners as well as professionals.
The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10am – 2pm and from 5.30pm – 8.30pm (6pm – 9pm in summer) Closed Sunday and Monday and on fiesta days.
