This shrine holds the image of the Virgin de la Peña, the patroness of Mijas. It is set in the rock by the El Compás view point where you have breathtaking views from Mijas down to the coastline. According to legend the image of the Virgin was hidden during five centuries and was found in 1586 by a builder, the father of two children who were led to the hiding place by a dove. Later the priest of the village presented the Holy Virgin to the villagers. The whole village knelt to pay their respects.
Inside the cavity where they found the virgin, they also found a strange shaped pair of candle sticks, two guardians relics, a ciborium, and pieces of jewellery and the history of the virgin. The Virgin was known from then on as the Virgin of the tower. Today you can visit at no charge and visit the displays and shrine, but also take advantage of the viewing point from here.
