Details

Sierra de Yeguas and its residents known as Serranos, lies in the northwest of Malaga province bordering with the provinces of Seville and Córdoba and geographically speaking, it is said that the town is in the dead centre of Andalucía.
The municipality is divided into two parts by the Albina stream, and the two riverbanks have traditionally been called Sevilla and Triana, (which are the names of Andalucía’s capital and its well known suburb), as it belonged to the province of Seville for many years. In times past the Corpus Christi celebrations maintained a rivalry between the two neighbourhoods to see who could put up the best altars and decorate the most streets, and to keep the rivalry detracting from the Catholic celebration, the processions would travel along the side of Sevilla on the calendar date and through Triana on the date that then coincided with the Octave.
The undulating landscape around this area is covered mainly in olive and almond trees, and stretches from the plains of the Antequera region to the Seville countryside, separated by the mountains of the Sierra de Los Caballos. This mountain range is not very high, (highest peak: 748 metres above sea level) and most of it is covered in oak trees and bushes. Almost 70 percent of the local working population is involved in agriculture on the plain which was once an ancient flood zone, with the production of olive oil, and asparagus farming. Asparagus has become an important commodity for the local economy and every year they have a local fiesta in its honour where the asparagus can be sampled in omelets, scrambled or grilled as well as offering the visitor an assortment of products from cheese to kitchen furnishings, all of which are made in the area. There is also a great local tradition of ironwork, woodwork, embroidery and crochet from this area.
Though Sierra de Yeguas was founded in the 16th century, the area has been lived in since Neolothic times and polished rock artefact remains found on the outskirts of the village shows that there was the presence of primitive man in the area. Roman remains have also been discovered here, the most interesting being the Roman hot baths at La Haza de Estepa and the burial grounds, as well as ceramics, columns, and some coins. The 16th century parish church, Inmaculada Concepcion, has a stone facade, two level tower where the belfry is crowned by a pointed and tiled pointed pyramidal steeple and bears the coat of arms of the Marqueses of Estepa from 1549, when the Sierra de Yeguas fell under the jurisdiction of Estepa (Seville) and it belonged to the province of Seville until the 17th century. Right up until 1874, all religious affairs in the village were controlled by the "verenullius" curacy, which made it dependent on Papal jurisdiction under the direct control of Rome.
The peace, tranquility and fresh mountain air attracts many people to the area with its clean and well planned streets along with the typical white facades of the traditional architectual buildings and ornate grill works in the windows and on the gates, and of course it is accessible to bigger towns nearby.
